The dataset collects and presents the funding provided by Cassa per il Mezzogiorno to industrial sectors following the approval of "Law No. 634/1957, Measures for the Mezzogiorno", in their dual form of interest subsidies and non-repayable grants. The reference period also includes the final phase of the entity's liquidation and Agensud's activities.
The dataset consists of 30 variables for 127,770 records, each referring to a funding disbursement for a single company, in a specific municipality and year. The variables include the type of disbursement ("non-repayable grants for industry" and "interest subsidies on industrial bonds and loans"), the beneficiary company and its identification number, the economic activity performed, the municipality, province and region of location, the amount disbursed, and the year of disbursement. Additionally, the variables include the company's economic sector, according to an original classification proposed by the authors, the revalued amount disbursed expressed in 2011 and 2021 euros, as well as the municipality, province, and region of location expressed according to 1991 boundaries.
The dataset was created by cleaning, classifying, and harmonizing the records originally contained in "Sinit" (Territorial Investment Information System), which collects information on funding disbursements to industrial companies from 1959 to 1993. The focus on disbursed amounts and the enhancement work distinguishes this dataset from other digital sources on extraordinary intervention. Additionally, two derived datasets are provided that show the intervention data aggregated at the provincial and sectoral levels, both by year.
The dataset was created as part of the PRIN 2022 The assessment of regional development policies in Italy through a new database (1950s–2000s). Its purpose is to provide a more readily usable information base for scholars and the public, enabling the comparison of economic values over time, facilitating spatial and sectoral analysis, and enabling integration with external data sources.
