This volume, the result of interdisciplinary work by a broad team of scholars, offers an analysis of territorial disparities, public intervention strategies, and industrial development in the Mezzogiorno from a long-term perspective, to understand the economic dynamics of contemporary Italy and its positioning within the context of European and global interdependencies. The authors' contributions provide a systemic interpretation of the "Southern question," based on a modern and updated vision. An approach aimed at considering the South as an "open problem" and, at the same time, an opportunity for overall growth for the country. In this way, it is possible to overcome old frameworks of Italian dualism or purely localistic models, measuring the southern phenomenon against the general trends of the economy and the very evolution of capitalism.
