Economic History, Economics, Economics and Finance, History
Since the end of the nineteenth century, the economic gap between North and South has widened and Italy has become a divided country. Why isn't the South as developed as the North? Starting from the economic and social conditions of the two areas at the time of Unification, the volume examines their development path up to the present day. It then addresses the various explanations for the Southern delay: anthropological and genetic, socio-cultural, and institutional. Initially aggravated by political choices, the North-South divide has also grown due to market forces: due to Italy's peculiar geography, the South has become an economically peripheral area. Today, in the era of globalization, the divide appears to be widening.
